ConsoliSheet worked example: five monthly sales reports that don't quite match ================================================================================ Every file in this example is invented sample data (made-up customers and product codes). It accompanies the guide "How to combine Excel files with different column names": https://www.consolisheet.com/combine-excel-files-with-different-columns/ The five sample files, exactly as they were uploaded: January.xlsx baseline: Customer | SKU | Quantity | Revenue | Region February.xlsx same fields, reordered, headings differ only in capitals and spaces (REVENUE, customer, Sku, "quantity ", region) March.csv semicolon-separated; differently worded headings: Client | Product Code | Qty | Sales | Territory April.xlsx two title rows and a blank row above the table; two extra fields: Sales Rep and Notes May.xlsx no Region column; a SUM total row under the data; a separate notes block beside the table (cells G1:G3) The completed result: ConsoliSheet-example-consolidated.xlsx the workbook produced by ConsoliSheet's processor for the decisions below (byte-for-byte as produced; only the file name was changed) What ConsoliSheet did on its own - Found each table: April's title rows and May's notes block are not data. - Lined up headings that differ only in capitals, spaces or order (all of February). - Kept columns that only some files have (Sales Rep, Notes; Region is blank for May). - Left out May's total row, because it is a SUM formula over the rows above it. What it suggested, but did not apply - Client -> Customer, Product Code -> SKU, Qty -> Quantity (all from March.csv). Each suggestion starts on "Keep separate". Nothing is combined until you choose "Use ...". What it did not suggest - Sales -> Revenue and Territory -> Region. In this example a person decided they mean the same thing in these files and combined them with "Combine two columns yourself". The decisions used for the completed workbook - Accepted the three suggestions. - Manually combined Sales -> Revenue and Territory -> Region. - Result: 7 business columns (Customer, SKU, Quantity, Revenue, Region, Sales Rep, Notes) plus the Source File column, 30 rows (6 from each file), in file and row order. - With no decisions the same files give 12 columns; accepting only the suggestions gives 9. Things to know - These decisions apply to this one consolidation. ConsoliSheet does not save them for next month's files. - Only a small, deliberately cautious set of wording differences is suggested. Many synonyms are not recognised; combine those yourself after checking what they mean. - March.csv's numbers arrive in the workbook as text (for example 440.0). ConsoliSheet does not yet convert numbers in CSV files; convert that column in Excel if you need to calculate with it. - The total row is left out only because it is a formula. A total typed in as a plain number would be kept as an ordinary row, so check for those. - Every data row is kept. This sample contains no exactly repeated rows, so it does not test duplicates; that exact duplicate rows are kept (not removed) was confirmed in ConsoliSheet's separate production acceptance testing. - Source File is a system column. It does not count toward the Free plan's five business columns. This example has seven business columns, so the complete download is a paid result on consolisheet.com; analysis, review and a preview of the first rows are free. Checksums (SHA-256) of every file are in SHA256SUMS.txt, next to this README.
